Importance of O&P in Pakistan
More than 600 million peoples in the world experience disabilities of various types and degrees. The global disabled population is increasing as a result of population growth aging clironic conditions malnutrition was land mines, violins, road, traffic, domestic and occupational injuries and other causes of ten related to poverty. These trends are creating an overwhelming demand for health and rehabilitation services..
An estimate 80% of the world’s disabled people line developing countries. The majority accessing health and rehab services, which ultimately lea to their exclusion from society.
One of the most important Components of rehab and support services and assistance devices ensure that people with disabilities are equal members of society. Among assistance devices, prosthesis and orthosis are required by the majority of people with physical disabilities.
They can be at least partly remond from poverty and be come active contributors to their families and society welfare with large if provided with rehab services by an integrated multi disciplinary health and social welfare team. Beneficiaries of prosthetics and Orthotics services can contribute positively to the socio economic condition of the country.
Prosthetics and Orthotics services play a major role in enabling a person with a disability to change from being immobile to be coming mobile a passive receiver to an active contributes and in solution to inclusion.
They also help to provide further means towards equality by helping a child with disability to go school or an adult with disability to go for skills training.
A world health organization consultation on training of personnel for prosthetics and Orthotics services in developing countries took place at Eastern Mediterranean regional office Alexandria Egypt in June 1990.
The purpose of the consultation was to prepare a general description of the work done by personnel who provide Prosthetic/ Orthotics and related rehab services
This is resulted in the publication guidelines for training personnel in developing countries for Prosthetic and Orthotics services (WHO 1990).
