University of Health Sciences is located in Lahore, which is the second largest city of Pakistan and the capital of the Province of Punjab. Lahore, is the city of 8 million, and also the educational seat of Pakistan. University of Health Sciences, Lahore regulates and coordinates the activities of medical education, training & research institutions throughout the province of Punjab. University of Health Sciences is the only institution offering specialization in medical, dental, nursing, bio-medical engineering and Allied Health Sciences (Orthotics & Prosthetics) education in the province of Punjab. Pakistan Institute of Prosthetics & Orthotics Sciences

HISTORY
PIPOS was initiated as PETCOT institute of and Orthotics sciences emerged from the German Afghanistan Assistnce Program which started in 1981 in D. I .Khan, district of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwah, to provide the needed orthopaedic appliances.

The German Agency for Technical Cooperation (G.T.Z) improved and enlarged the existed O&P setup at Hayat Shaheed Teaching Hospital attached to Khyber Medical College. The Production of appliances , however was the first step.

It turned out soon necessary that a training and education programme was needed on much higher level. The idea was born to establish an institute for the first time in Pakistan for BSc. degree in Orthotics Prosthetics under the University of. PETCOT started its function in 1988.

PETCOT was later on named as Pakistan Institute of Prosthetics & Orthotics (PIPOS) Pakistan. PIPOS has been awarded as Category-II accreditation for training and education in the field of Prosthetics and Orthotics by ISPO (International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics) based in Denmark

Persons with disabilities are mostly unseen, unheard and uncounted persons in Pakistan. They are the most marginalized group. Persons with Disabilities face overwhelming barriers in education, skills development and daily life. Persons with disabilities also face multiple social, economic, physical and political problem, hampering their freedom of movement in society. These barriers include stigmatization and misunderstanding of the abilities and aspirations of persons with disabilities. There is also a pronounced lack of informational data, rules regulations, rehabilitation centers, mainstreaming and specialized services for persons with disabilities.In Pakistan, no single ministry or federal department deals with issues related to disability. There is only the ministry for social welfare, women development and special education, which touch upon person with disabilities issues.

However, at the local level, there are no specific departments responsible for person with disabilities. Moreover, Pakistanis believe that persons with disabilities are a social burden and a curse on the family. These beliefs lead to the misunderstanding of disability, they prevent people from obtaining appropriate information and being educated. Employment opportunities for persons with disabilities are very limited, so they are a financial burden for their families.

IPM&R is committed to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation services with state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility and evidence based practice to help the patients return to an active and healthy lifestyle.

IPM&R is dedicated to being an internationally significant rehabilitation institute in the promotion, development and dissemination of research and education in the science of Rehabilitation through its activities and partnerships with internal and external communities.

IPM&R is keen to produce qualified skilled rehabilitation professional through undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degree programs along with residency program in physiatry.
